Understanding Juvenile Courts
Juvenile justice is unlike traditional criminal defense. In Family Court,
the system is there to assist the child and the family by responding to
the difficulties the child is facing, as well as the child's misunderstandings.
Juvenile cases often arise in the context of other issues relating to the
child and the family, including:
- Divorces
- Substance abuse
- Sexual activity with minors
- Neglect
- Abuse
Indeed, it has been our experience that many young people who become involved
in crimes or acts of juvenile delinquency have serious problems that underlie
their behavior. Many do not receive adequate supervision, and some have
been victims of neglect and abuse. In a few instances, we have seen juveniles
abused by care providers in group home settings. These experiences during
childhood have devastating physical and emotional effects that can last
a lifetime.
The focus of our practice is protecting the rights of children and families.
Our extensive experience as accomplished child advocates makes us uniquely
qualified to assist young people who have come into contact with the legal
system. Our goal is to serve in the best interests of our juvenile clients,
protecting their legal rights, and obtaining the help that they need to
get their lives on track.
