HOW TO TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT DIVORCE

Divorce is difficult enough, and even more so when you share children with your spouse. While choosing to end your relationship with your spouse maybe something you are comfortable with, telling your children what is happening can be the ultimate challenge. We have all heard stories of adults who came from broken homes, who claim their parents' divorce was what started it all. However, it doesn't have to be that way for you. With our tips, you can rest assured you will be setting up your children for the most positive and beneficial future possible.

The following are important tips to help you talk to your children about divorce, including but not limited to:

  • Remind them it has nothing to do with them. Many children will feel guilty when their parents are separating because they will somehow believe it is their fault. You must do everything in your power to make sure your child does not believe this is the case.
  • Depending on how old your children are, you must control the information they are privy to. If your children are younger, they don't need to know much more than the bare minimum. The older they are, the more they will understand. Try to be as honest and positive as possible.
  • Don't bring your spouse down, as children are quick to pick up on these nuances. Speaking negatively about their other parent will only make the situation worse.
